Abstract Globally, bats are of interest in many studies, beyond their ecological or epidemiological relevance or even the ecomorphological diversity of species. In Brazil, most of the indexed studies on chiropterans date from 1954, with a slow and heterogeneous progress in the publication increasing. The aim of this study was to analyze the literature on bats in Brazil, identifying patterns, tendencies and knowledge gaps in the Brazilian federal states. We carried out a sistematyzed search on the online databases Clarivate Analytics Web of Science (WoS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and Scopus. We used the descriptive terms “Chiroptera” and “Brazil”. Besides these bases, we included data from the manuscripts published in Chiroptera Neotropical. We obtained a total of 1,115 articles, which were analyzed and classified in 22 thematic categories based on the articles’ approach. We observed that each Brazilian region and state had particularities in their knowledge panoramas of bats, not being possible to generalize conditions for each federal region. Even though the increasing in the number of articles by categories, we encourage that every approach keep being developded, once no thematic could had been considered enough explored till the moment.

Resumen El género Inga Mill. pertenece al clado mimosoide (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) con 131 especies en Brasil. Es el género más importante de las Fabáceas. En este sentido, el objetivo de este estudio fue realizar un análisis bibliométrico de Inga en el Estado de Santa Catarina. Se condujo un estudio de la literatura publicada utilizando las bases de datos electrónicas de la Web of Science, Scopus y SciELO con los nombres aceptados de las especies Inga y sus sinónimos. Los trabajos se distribuyeron en cuatro categorías temáticas: C1 (ecológico), C2 (morfología, anatomía, taxonomía, histología, fisiología y genética), C3 (producción y uso) y C4 (propiedades bioquímicas y nutricionales). Se registraron 232 trabajos para 13 especies de Inga, donde se exhibió un notable incremento de publicaciones. C1 fue la categoría temática más estudiada, principalmente en temas tales como: suministro de nutrientes, sombra y capacidad de fijación de nitrógeno. Inga edulis, I. vera e I. marginata fueron las especies más registradas en nuestro estudio. Nuestros resultados mostraron un aumento en el número de artículos sobre Inga con el tiempo, especialmente en los últimos 13 años. Sin embargo, es necesario abordar algunos vacíos importantes como el número relativamente pequeño y/o la falta de estudios realizados para algunas especies.

Abstract The genus Inga Mill. belongs to the mimosoid clade (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) that includes 131 species in Brazil. It is the most important genus of Fabaceae. In this sense, this study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis on Inga from Santa Catarina state. A survey of the published literature was conducted using the electronic databases of the Web of Science, Scopus and Scielo with the accepted names of Inga species and its synonyms. Papers were distributed in four subject categories: C1 (Ecological), C2 (morphology, anatomy, taxonomy, histology, physiology and genetics), C3 (production and use) and C4 (biochemical and nutritional properties). We registered 232 papers for 13 species of Inga. C1 was the most studied subject category, mainly in topics such as nutrient supply, shade and nitrogen fixing capacity. We also noticed that the subjects diversified over the years, with registered papers in all categories. Inga edulis, I. vera and I. marginata were the most registered species in our survey. Our results showed an increase in the number of articles on Inga over time, especially in the last 13 years. However, some important gaps need to be addressed, such as the relatively small number and/or lack of studies conducted for some species.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the structure and composition of native palm communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was carried out at “Parque Estadual da Serra Furada” (PAESF), a protected area located in southern state of Santa Catarina. A palm community survey was carried out in Dense Ombrophilous Forest in five 20 m × 100 m sampling units, totaling 1ha. All palm individuals were measured, totaling 11,183 plants, belonging to four genera and five species: Bactris setosa Mart., Euterpe edulis Mart., Geonoma gamiova Barb.Rodr., Geonoma schottiana Mart. and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. Euterpe edulis was the most common species, contributing the most to all phytosociological parameters; however, relatively few large individuals were found. Our study demonstrates the limitations of traditional forest surveys that ignore smaller diameter palm species and highlights the importance of the role of this group in the floristic diversity, ecosystem function, environmental services and carbon dynamics.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the extraction process of palm species (Arecaceae) and their different forms of use by the population in the surroundings of the “Parque Estadual da Serra Furada” (PAESF), located in the south region of Santa Catarina state, as well as understand the perception of the interviewees about the park. The data were obtained through interviews with long-time residents of the area. The results were analyzed by content analysis. Four palm species were cited by the interviewees: Bactris setosa Mart., Euterpe edulis Mart., Geonoma gamiova Barb.Rodr., and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. The most widespread uses of these palm species were for food and in construction. The leaves were the main part of the plant used, with emphasis to E. edulis. In general, the PAESF and its palms are important resources for the interviewees; however, today, knowledge remains mostly only in the memory of the residents.

RESUMO As palmeiras (Arecaceae) são elementos-chave que contribuem para a biodiversidade florestal do Estado de Santa Catarina. No entanto, a Lista Oficial de Espécies da Flora Ameaçadas para o Estado de Santa Catarina é incompleta, incluindo apenas duas espécies desta família (Butia catarinensis Noblick & Lorenzi e B. eriospatha (Mart. Ex Drude) Becc.). Neste contexto, o presente estudo propõe uma revisão desta lista para a família Arecaceae, com base nas avaliações do status de conservação realizadas para cada um dos táxons nativos do Estado. Para isso foram utilizadas importantes fontes de dados sobre a distribuição das espécies, incluindo o Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), uma compilação de pesquisas publicadas, dados de coleta dos herbários do Estado, observações e dados do Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina (IFFSC). As informações para cada espécie foram importadas para o software GeoCAT (Geospatial Conservation Assessment Tool). Foram avaliadas todas as 11 espécies de palmeiras nativas. Dez espécies foram consideradas em risco de extinção, pelas categorias e critérios da Lista Vermelha da IUCN. O grande número de espécies de palmeiras em risco de extinção chama atenção para a necessidade urgente de atualizações da lista oficial de espécies ameaçadas do Estado.

ABSTRACT Palms (Arecaceae) are key elements that contribute to the forest biodiversity of the State of Santa Catarina. However, the official List of Endangered Flora Species of that State is incomplete, including only two Arecaceae species (Butia catarinensis Noblick & Lorenzi and B. eriospatha (Mart. Ex Drude) Becc.). Within this context, this study proposes a revision of the Official List of Arecaceae for Santa Catarina, based on the assessment of the conservation status made for each of the State’s native palm species. To assess the conservation status of the palm species in Santa Catarina, important sources on species distribution were used, including the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), a compilation of previously published, herbarium information, field observations, and data from the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina (IFFSC). Information for each species was imported into GeoCAT software (Geospatial Conservation Assessment Tool). All 11 native palm species of Santa Catarina were evaluated. Ten species were considered at risk of extinction according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. This large number of palm species at risk of extinction calls attention to the urgent need for updates of the Official List of Endangered Species in the State.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar levantamento florístico e estrutural em um fragmento florestal urbano no Parque Ecológico Municipal José Milanese, no município de Criciúma, Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil, enfatizando a importância deste fragmento para a conservação de espécies ameaçadas. O levantamento consistiu na instalação de 100 parcelas contíguas de 10 × 10 m em Floresta Ombrófila Densa Submontana, sendo amostradas todas as espécies arborescentes com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 5 cm. Foram registradas 137 espécies, sendo Myrtaceae a família mais rica. Cryptocarya moschata Nees & Mart. apresentou o maior valor de importância, principalmente pelo maior diâmetro de seus caules, seguida por Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Myrcia pubipetala Miq. e Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil., evidenciando a possibilidade de suas utilizações em programas de restauração ecológica em fragmentos florestais da região. Conclui-se que o fragmento estudado apresenta elevada riqueza específica, quando comparado com outros na região, tornando-o uma importante fonte de propágulos para áreas adjacentes. Além disso, o conhecimento produzido a partir deste estudo poderá fornecer alternativas de uso e manejo em áreas similares, ou mesmo, ambientes florestais alterados, de forma geral.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to carry out a floristic and structural survey of an urban forest fragment at ‘Parque Ecológico Municipal José Milanese’, in the municipality of Criciúma, Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil, emphasizing the importance of this fragment for the conservation of endangered species. Survey consisted in the installation of 100 contiguous plots of 10 × 10 m in Submontane Dense Ombrophilous Forest, all tree species with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were sampled. One hundred and thirty-seven (137) species were recorded, being Myrtaceae the richest family. Cryptocarya moschata Nees & Mart. presented the highest value of importance, mainly due to the larger diameter of its stems, followed by Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Myrcia pubipetala Miq. and Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil., evidencing the possibility of their use in ecological restoration programs in forest fragments of the region. We concluded that the fragment studied has a high specific richness when compared to others in the region, making it an important source of propagules for adjacent areas. In addition, the knowledge produced from this study may provide alternatives for use and management in similar areas, or even altered forest environments, in general.

Resumo Neste estudo foram analisadas a distribuição e o status de conservação das palmeiras arbustivas no estado brasileiro de Santa Catarina utilizando os dados coletados pelo Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina (IFFSC). As palmeiras arbustivas foram amostradas sistematicamente em Unidades Amostrais (UA) distribuídas sobre o estado em parcelas de 10 × 10 km. Dentre todas as 206 UA levantadas pelo IFFSC na Floresta Pluvial e Litorânea, 86% (n= 177 UA) tiveram a presença de palmeiras arbustivas, totalizando 1738 indivíduos das seguintes espécies: Bactris setosa, Geonoma elegans, G. gamiova e G. schottiana. Para investigar o status de conservação das palmeiras arbustivas de Santa Catarina foi sobreposto o mapa das áreas prioritárias para conservação com os dados de distribuição das palmeiras arbustivas coletados pelas equipes do IFFSC. Os níveis de prioridade de conservação definidos pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) foram classificados como Extremamente Alto, Muito Alto, Alto e Insuficientemente Conhecido. Noventa e quatro por cento das UA contendo palmeiras arbustivas sobrepuseram áreas prioritárias para conservação, destacando a importância das palmeiras arbustivas na conservação da biodiversidade. Apesar da ampla distribuição das comunidades de palmeiras arbustivas em Santa Catarina, são necessárias pesquisas minuciosas nos remanescentes florestais tendo em vista a sensibilidade à perturbação ambiental, de forma a garantir a manutenção das populações de palmeiras arbustivas e seus serviços ecossistêmicos.

Abstract In this study, we examined the distribution and conservation status of understory palms in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina using data collected by the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina (IFFSC). Understory palms were systematically sampled within sampling units (SU) distributed over a state-wide 10 × 10 km grid. Among the 206 total SU monitored by IFFSC within Pluvial and Coastal Forest, 86% (n=177 SU) contained understory palms, comprising 1738 individuals from the following species: Bactris setosa, Geonoma elegans, G. gamiova, and G. schottiana. To explore the conservation status of understory palm populations in Santa Catarina, we overlaid a map of federal priority conservation areas on top of IFFSC distribution data for understory palms. Conservation priority levels defined by the Brazilian Environmental Agency (MMA) are rated Extremely High, Very High, High and Insufficiently Known. Ninety-four percent of the SU containing understory palms overlapped priority conservation areas, highlighting the centrality of understory palms in biodiversity conservation. Despite the wide distribution of understory palm communities in Santa Catarina, intense scrutiny of forest remnants is necessary in view of sensitivity to environmental disturbance, so as to guarantee the maintenance of understory palm populations and their ecosystem services.

RESUMO Um Projeto Piloto de Recuperação (PPR) foi desenvolvido em 1982 pela Fundação do Meio Ambiente do Estado de Santa Catarina - Brasil, objetivando avaliar a adaptação de espécies arbóreas em áreas degradadas pela mineração de carvão. Após uma completa reconstituição topográfica da paisagem, além da carga de nutrientes e sementes de espécies herbáceas, a área foi dividida em 12 pontos onde foram plantadas mudas de 12 espécies de árvores: três espécies nativas [Bastardiopsis densiflora (Hook. & Arn.) Hassl., Mimosa scabrella Benth., Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake)] e nove espécies exóticas [Eucalyptus saligna Sm., E. viminalis Labill., C. citriodora Hook., Grevillea hilliana F.Muell., Hovenia dulcis Thunb., Melia azedarach L., Pinus elliottii Engelm., P. taeda L., Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels]. Após 22 anos, as espécies exóticas apresentaram elevada taxa de sobrevivência em comparação com as espécies nativas; os pontos que receberem B. densiflora e S. parahyba foram cobertos apenas com espécies herbáceas associadas com alguns arbustos. Reciprocamente, os pontos que receberam mudas de M. scabrella demonstraram claras evidências no processo de restauração. O estudo conduzido em pontos que receberam M. scabrella indicaram uma melhoria na carga de nutrientes (N, K, matéria orgânica) no substrato, uma composição diversificada da cobertura arbórea (muito similar com os remanescentes próximos de Floresta Atlântica) e outras formas de vida, com proeminente estabelecimento de árvores nativas com predominância de espécies zoofílicas e zoocóricas. Algumas características de M. scabrella que podem explicar esta excepcional capacidade de melhorar a restauração da Floresta Atlântica também são discutidas ao longo desse artigo.

ABSTRACT A Pilot Reclamation Project (PRP) was developed in 1982 by the Environmental Protection Agency of the State of Santa Catarina-Brazil, with the objective to evaluating the adaptation of woody species to a land degraded by coal mining. After a full topographic reconstitution of the landscape, addition of nutrient load and sowing of herbaceous species, the area was split into 12 plots in which seedlings of 12 tree species were planted: three native trees [Bastardiopsis densiflora (Hook. & Arn.) Hassl., Mimosa scabrella Benth., Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake] and nine exotic species [Eucalyptus saligna Sm., E. viminalis Labill., E. citriodora Hook., Grevillea hilliana F.Muell., Hovenia dulcis Thunb, Melia azedarach L., Pinus elliottii Engelm., P. taeda L., Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels]. After 22 years, from the beginning of the PRP, the exotic species presented higher percentage of survival than native species; the plots which received either B. densiflora and S. parahyba or were covered only with herbaceous vegetation associated with solely a few shrubs. Conversely, the plots which received seedlings of M. scabrella displayed clear evidence of restoration in progress. The study conducted in plots that have received M. scabrella indicate an improvement of nutrient load (N, K, organic matter) in the substrate, a diversified composition of tree coverage (very similar to the nearby remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest) and other life forms, with prominent establishment of native trees with predominance of zoophilous and zoochorous species. Some characteristics of M. scabrella that could explain its outstanding capacity to enhance the restoration of the Atlantic Rainforest are also discussed along this paper.

Resumo Para ampliar o conhecimento sobre a planície costeira do Estado de Santa Catarina, foi realizado um estudo fitossociológico do componente arbustivo-arbóreo na restinga da Lagoa do Arroio Corrente, no município de Jaguaruna, sul do Estado. Para amostragem da vegetação, foi usado o método de parcelas, incluindo os indivíduos com diâmetro a altura do solo (DAS) mínimo de 2,5 cm. Constatou-se, diferença de altura na fitofisionomia do trecho superior (5 m) e do trecho inferior (10 m) das dunas, optando-se por realizar a amostragem separadamente. A vegetação da restinga da Lagoa do Arroio Corrente apresentou, no trecho superior, estratificação de baixo porte (1 a 5 m), destacando-se indivíduos arbustivos, conferindo aparência densa à vegetação, devido ao desenvolvimento aglomerado dessas plantas e, no trecho inferior, com indivíduos arbóreos emergentes, conferindo dois estratos, um mais baixo com predomínio de vegetação arbustiva (2 a 5 m) e um segundo com indivíduos arbóreos (até 10 m). A riqueza florística resultou em 17 famílias, 25 gêneros e 32 espécies. A área basal total foi de 4,3 m2.ha-1 (trecho superior) e 23,2 m2.ha-1 (trecho inferior). Guapira opposita (Vell.) Reitz apresentou maior valor de importância, destacando-se também nos demais parâmetros fitossociológicos analisados (frequência, densidade e dominância). As análises efetuadas contribuem com dados estruturais para as restingas de Santa Catarina, podendo auxiliar na caracterização da vegetação dos cordões arenosos do sul do Brasil.

Abstract In order to develop a greater understanding of the coastal land of the state of Santa Catarina, we carried out a phytosociological study of shrub-tree component in the restinga of the Lagoa do Arroio Corrente, in the municipality of Jaguaruna, in the southern part of the state. The study used the “plots” method, including shrub-trees with a diameter at soil height (DSH) minimum of 2.5 cm. We found a difference in the height of shrub-trees individuals in the upper (10 m) and lower (5 m) sections, and opted to carry out sampling in these two vegetation types separately. The restinga’s vegetation of the Lagoa do Arroio Corrente had, in the upper section, low size stratification (1 to 5 m), due to shrubby individuals, with dense vegetation cover, due to the development of clusters of plants and, in the lower section, with emerging individual trees, resulting in two strata: a lower stratum, with predominance of shrubby (2 to 5) and an upper stratum, with tree individuals (up to 10 m). The floristic richness resulted in 17 botanical families, 25 genera and 32 species. The total basal area was 4.3 m2.ha-1 (upper section) and 23.2 m2.ha-1 (lower section). Guapira opposita (Vell.) Reitz exhibited the highest importance value, with other outstanding phytosociological parameters (frequency, density, and dominance). The analyses performed contribute to structural data for restingas of Santa Catarina, assisting in the characterization of vegetation of sand bars of Southern Brazil.

Resumo As características estruturais e ecológicas da vegetação herbácea fazem com que ela seja sensível às alterações do ambiente, atuando como indicador da qualidade ambiental. No entanto, o estudo dessa comunidade ainda é incipiente em regiões neotropicais. Este estudo descreve a florística e os aspectos fitossociológicos da vegetação herbácea terrícola na mata ciliar de sete rios, no município de Urussanga, sul do estado de Santa Catarina, além de analisar e quantificar o status do conhecimento científico relacionado às herbáceas terrícolas no Brasil. Foram levantadas 320 unidades amostrais de 4 m², nas quais todos os indivíduos foram identificados e dados relacionados aos parâmetros fitossociológicos foram coletados. A amostragem resultou em 58 táxons, 38 pertencentes às angiospermas e 20 às samambaias, distribuídos em 25 famílias botânicas. Poaceae apresentou maior riqueza, com 11 espécies. Estruturalmente, destacaram-se Goeppertia monophylla (Vell.) Borchs. e S. Suárez, Blechnum brasiliense Desv. e Heliconia farinosa Raddi. A forma de vida mais frequente foi a hemicriptófita reptante. Os resultados revelam uma elevada riqueza de herbáceas terrícolas adaptadas às condições climáticas das matas ciliares, contribuindo para a diversidade da flora regional. Quanto à produção científica, foram encontrados 50 trabalhos indexados nas bases de dados eletrônicas (1990 a 2015), com destaque ao ano de 2011, que teve maior produção científica enfocando as herbáceas terrícolas. Embora com baixo número, a quantidade de indexações tende a crescer, em virtude do avanço da tecnologia de acesso às bases de dados e pela crescente adesão de periódicos em portais de busca.

Abstract The structural and ecological characteristics of herbaceous vegetation make it sensitive to environmental changes, acting as environmental quality indicator. However, studies of the herbaceous community are as yet rare in neotropical regions. This paper describes the floristics and phytosociology of terrestrial herbaceous vegetation in the riparian forest of seven rivers near the town of Urussanga, Southern Santa Catarina, Brazil, and also analyzes and quantifies the status of scientific knowledge related to terrestrial herbaceous vegetation in Brazil. The study selected 320 sampling units of 4 m²; species were identified and related data regarding phytosociological parameters were collected. The sampling discovered 58 taxa, of which 38 belonged to angiosperms and 20 to ferns, distributed in 25 botanical families. Poaceae was the most prevalent with 11 species. Structurally, Goeppertia monophylla (Vell) Borchs and S. Suárez, Blechnum brasiliense Desv and Heliconia farinosa Raddi stood out. The most common form of life was reptant hemicryptophyte. The results indicate a richness of terrestrial herbaceous vegetation adapted to the climatic conditions of a riparian forest, contributing to diversity of the regional flora. Regarding scientific production, 50 papers were found in electronic databases (1990-2015), with 2011 as the year with greatest scientific production regarding terrestrial herbaceous vegetation. Nevertheless, despite the low number of indexed papers found regarding terrestrial herbaceous vegetation, the amount tends to increase due to advancements in database access technology.

Este estudo indicou os produtos florestais não madeireiros (PFNM) associados a espécies arbóreas dos remanescentes de Floresta Ombrófila Densa estudados no Sul de Santa Catarina. As espécies analisadas foram hierarquizadas com base na análise de valor potencial de exploração sustentável (VPES) dos PFNM, integrando-se às seguintes informações obtidas a partir de revisão bibliográfica: densidade, parte usada, capacidade de regeneração natural e crescimento, conhecimento sobre biologia reprodutiva e dinâmica populacional, processamento requerido e nível de injúria ou toxicidade. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam ser possível a conservação e desenvolvimento regional, a partir de alternativas sustentáveis de uso dos recursos florestais. Das 79 espécies observadas, 38 atingiram VPES igual ou superior a 10, sendo consideradas de elevado potencial de exploração sustentável de PFNM.

This study indicated the non-timber forest products (NTFPs) associated with tree species of the remnants of Tropical Rain Forest studied in southern Santa Catarina. The species examined were ranked according to their potential value for sustainable exploitation (PVSE) of NTFP, applying the following information obtained from literature review: density, parts used, capacity for natural regeneration and growth, knowledge about reproductive biology and population dynamic, required processing and level of injury or toxicity. The results show possible conservation and regional development, from alternative sustainable use of forest resources. Of the 79 species observed, 38 reached PVSE equal or higher than 10, being considered of high potential for sustainable exploitation of NTFP.
